YACHT’s self-awareness is always staggering. The LA-based brainchild of Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans have consistently used the means of their art (electronic production) as a tool to comment on some of the more alienating factors of digital culture; see “Where Does This Disco?” and “Plastic Man” as some prime examples.
Their new single “I Thought The Future Would Be Cooler,” off their forthcoming album of the same name, carries with it themes of totalitarian-like control in the age of data mining and drones. On the original version, Evans sings:
“Loving comes easy (Nothing new)
But liking it ain’t free. (Underneath the sun)
We save our face in public (I can’t save you)
While we erase each other privately. (You’re already gone)”
Enter in the remix from the next-level Norwegian Rytmeklubben collective, and what you have is an abstract realization of Evans’ dystopian lyrical themes in the form of a bubbly, thumping club track. As Evans told Billboard, “There’s nothing more powerful than a pop song in terms of conveying a message succinctly and in a memorable way. If you can get a hook into someone’s brain, you have them forever.” YACHT and Rytmeklubben harness this power quite effectively. Check out the remix above and let them have you 4ever.
