We all remember the first time we witnessed the pure magic of a Missy Elliot music video. I remember being six years old and wanting to quit school to become one of Elliott’s back up dancers after seeing The Rain. Since then, there is not one video that has disappointed us – the bees that gave us nightmares in Work It, the bejeweled denim of Get Ur Freak On, or the weird severed head in One Minute Man all took a new approach on what the potential of a music video could be.
It’s been seven years since an Elliot video dropped, but she has always been more than a rapper – her resume includes songwriting/producing for Mariah Carey, Aaliyah, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and more. Needless to say, she has done so much for hip hop that is not limited to her theatric, high energy and creatively wardrobed music videos.
Check out her first video in seven years, WTF (Where They From) Ft. Pharrell. I don’t even know where to start, between the metallic space suit and matching silver lipstick (where can I get that?), the biggie homage, or the twerking puppets. Currently experiencing intense levels of anxiety knowing I will never own any of the outfits in this music video.
Missy, it’s good to have you back.
