Before we get into this, let’s take the time to appreciate an artist giving the public something on their birthday rather than expecting gifts in return… Ok, does everyone appreciate that now? Great. Witty Rock is another force to be reckoned with in a rapidly evolving Baltimore hip-hop scene. So far, through 1833, I have discovered that Charm City is full of talent, and I’m not sure why it isn’t being heard much farther outside of the DMV. The more I listen to Baltimore hip-hop, the more I can begin to recognize that’s exactly where it’s from based solely on accents; there seems to be a nasally sound with most of the emcee’s I’ve come across. Witty‘s 3 track birthday EP is packed full of feelings and emotions. From anger to sadness, rage to depression – Witty covers a wide array of emotional content in such a short period of time. Maybe this has to do with the fact that some of the injustices that have taken place in Baltimore have been all over the news since last spring, even though residents of Baltimore would tell you that it was only a matter of time before something like that happened. Clever wordplay over perfectly selected production, provided by Yamata Forever, hallmark the short listen from the Maryland emcee. The only features are from 2 members of his 9MBC% crew: Juego The Ninety and Juneya who both compliment the opening track, Mano, in a more-than impressive way. Drugs, existentialism, and frustration are the keynotes of Witty’s latest; and I’m not sure about you, but he certainly has my attention.
