“I hope my son dreams to be mountains. I hope he dreams to change the face of the earth… I hope he knows his skin is gold… I hope he never becomes a hashtag. I hope to never see him on the back of a t-shirt. I hope no man in no uniform assumes he’s reaching for something in his pocket… I hope he flies.” – Malik Shakur
Raury and his friend Malik Shakur wrote “Fly” in response to no indictment for Darren Wilson in the killing of Mike Brown. Raury said “I wrote it instantly, the words and music didn’t even feel like mine… “Fly” is an ode to the ones who were wrongfully murdered.” The Indigo Child movement finds hope and a positive vibe even when writing about this impossibly difficult reality.
I hope Raury is on an 1833 show sometime soon.
