First thing I wanted to ask was about your approach to vocals. It is very non conventional, possibly with a heavy influence from screamo? Or possibly Animal Collective ? Do you want to tell me how you settled on this style of rapping?
My style comes a lot of places, but mostly from my bus rides in high school. I was a miserable little fricker in high school. no one knew what I was going through and I didn’t know either. then I discovered skramz. then I discovered strawberry jam (lmao poseur confirmed *Lil Mewtwo voice*). Gucci Mane, Jeezy, Noah23, Sole and all those rap legends. I was listening to pretty much strictly death metal/grindcore and “real hip hop” (ugh lol) prior to learning there was so much more out there. everyday is would listen to something new on the bus. sometimes I would show my friends stuff like The Residents and Ween and Zappa and they’d just give me weird looks. but then other times I’d show old school DJ Paul and they be like yoooooo you like this stuff??? it was a strange time but it def made me who I am today. I love sharing music more than most other things. I wouldn’t make music until junior year, and it would be with my good friend Dante (aka Dankte aka DZV aka Mr. Steal Ur Dro). we played under various names (including Big Sharpie And Fatty Black. imma let the noise rock fans catch this) before finally settling on Sometimes Its Ok To Cry. we played about a dozen shoes before having to break up when my new cat started freaking out whenever I would practice drums. there is probably footage of us pretending to play live on YouTube somewhere. so we started rapping together. all these past experiences have inspired me to rap the way I do. also, my more recent discovery of Thugger and Lil Ugly Mane has played a big role in shaping my sound. Shouts out to them. ALSO BIG UPS TO EVERYONE I MET ON GAIA ONLINE BACK IN HIGH SCHOOL. YALL SHAPED MY MUSIC TASTE TO WHAT IT IS NOW AND WERE MY FRIENDS WHEN I DIDNT HAVE ANY. I am very thankful I am still in contact with some of them especially since I don’t remember my password.
How would you explain the album title and artwork to someone completely unfamiliar with your music?
Glad you asked me this question, cause the artwork and title represent two very important things to me: the celebration of the individual and self-love, respectively. they these themes tie into each other along with the music itself. lemme break those two concepts down for y’all. i got a nice lil playlist going for this and everything 🙂 ~the artwork of you may not realize and the celebration of the individual~ *Deerhoof – Qui Dorm, Només Somia is playing in the background, on loop as you can probably imagine. i luv mee sum hoof* first off, I don’t agree with the concept of celebrity that I see today. At all. We alienate celebrities, and in turn tend to feel alienated by them. Like wtf why do we do this??? They are humans just like us, and should be able to feel the same things we do. Or at least not be put in positions where they can’t. So i propose a solution, or at least part of one: we celebrate EVERYONE. Here, take this lil questionaire if u got the time ~~~~~~
Wun) do you consider yourself a good person/capable of love and being loved? (we will talk more about this in a minute)
Too) are you doing what you want to do or working towards doing so?
Tree) are you learning from your mistakes and bettering yourself over time?
If you can honestly answer “yes” to at least two of these… CONGRATS!!! U ARE NOW A CELEB IN MY EYES! I CELEBRATE UR EXISTENCE AND THANK YOU FOR BEING ALIVE AT THE SAME TIME AS I 😀 for real good job my friend keep it up. if not… good news!!! you’re still alive! It’s not too late to change yourself for the better. I believe in you, want you to believe in yourself as well. don’t give up. see, if everyone is celebrated and encouraged to improve, we can help eliminate so much suffering in the world. the art i made for YMNRT is a demonstration of that; it is a celebration of who iIam. imagine a museum exhibit dedicated to you, with your favorite pictures of you and things that are important in your life on display. people will come to your exhibit and say “wow, your’e a cool person. I’m glad you exist. lets have lunch sometime. btw I love fire emblem too u got a DS fam?”. And you will go to their exhibit and say the same thing. or something like that. lol it is unfortunate that I have people in my life who feel that they don’t deserve what I have just described to you. which bring us to the next subject.
. ~you may not realize and self-love~ *This Will Destroy You – Happiness: We’re All In It Together fades into my browser, I am tripping balls off life and positivity. tybg* in my humble lil opinion, self-love is CRUCIAL for our surivival in today’s world. Look at american culture for a minute: we are constantly bombarded by the idea that we are not good enough. commercials tell us that we need to lose weight, change the way we look and consume what they are selling us. massive daisy chains of abuse cycles and a negative emotions pass on from one person to the next, too insidious for many of us to even noticed until it’s too late and we have been affected. We are made to feel like we are not good enough, like loving yourself is a selfish act, like you need to find love somewhere else or with someone else. but you really should. When you love yourself, it is easier to love! you need to recognize that you are great. That you are the reason your friends get out of bed in the morning that you have ideas that could change the lives of others for the better if you put your mind to them that you can make the world a better place and encourage others to do the same, creating a positive daisy chain a very cute positive daisy chain omg so adorable ahhhhhhhh but i digress. The full title of YMNRT is “you may not realize this but you are shining; i can almost see it from here.” Which goes out to everyone, everywhere. You have potential to be the best you that you can be and I can feel it. Once you realize this for yourself, your life will improve. So I encourage everyone reading this to practice loving yourself.
Look in the mirror and tell yourself nice things, things you like about yourself. Even if you think they are small i can assure you they are not. I am great I am important I am worthy of love i am improving and reaching my goals i love me. Try any of those sometime. Maybe write them down. make your own (i just freestyled those tbh). Keep at it. You’ve got this budie. :^]
Ok lastly – how can the net amount of entropy of the universe be massively decreased?
I’m going to level with you here: i’m no Science Boi. I almost failed my physics course in college, probably cause I spent most of my time in class flirting with this one qt who would always sit behind me with a green knit cap on. Wonder how they are doing now or if they kept any of the Elliot Smith lyrics i would pass to them during lectures… but yeah my surface knowledge of this concept does not provide a logical answer. Fortunately, I know what I would do once we take logic out of the picture: first off, I would drink orange juice. Lots and lots of unpasteurized orange juice. When I’m done with that I would take five shots of concentrated yerba mate before watching every episode of Seinfield, from best episode to worst episode (in order give me a sense of perspective). Once everything kicks in I will stand outside of the parking lot of my local Trader Joe’s, get down on my knees and whip out my favorite pink karaoke tape deck. I shall blast a witchhouse remix of Cher – If I Could Turn Back Time that lasts exactly 7 days at maximum volume. Provided I do not pass out from this immense spiritual journey (not worried about anyone interrupting me; they shall look me in the eyes and know i do not fear death), I will indeed turn back time and end up in the 1500s next to the fountain of youth. I will drink its elixir. It will not restore my body, having aged forty years under stress caused by time travel, but i will live forever. All that will be left to do is find a protégée to continue this legacy. “but Miles,” I can hear the hypothetical crowd holler from the dusty bleachers of my mind, “How does this decrease the net entropy of the universe? What you described is clearly a local event” to which I reply:
“IDK dudes. Read a book or something. books r tite.”
