In my opinion, Father John Misty’s I Love You, Honeybear is the best album to come out this year. The 34 year old singer/songwriter, who most notably played drums in Fleet Foxes before their split, has a knack with words I don’t see in other artists creating today.
This morning, FJM released the visuals for “That Night Josh Tillman Came To Our Apartment”, my personal favorite off I Love You, Honeybear. The video tells the story of J. Tillman, FJM’s real name, entering a bar and catching eyes with a handsome gentlemen, also played by J. Tillman. The two have a few drinks and get to talking before they retreat to J. Tillman #2’s house to do cocaine and swim in his swimming pool. Before long, the two find themselves making out with each other and eventually, sleeping together. The whole video has an incredibly creep vibe to it, as it slightly depicts the deepest fantasy of a sociopath.
My personal favorite part about the video is still the song, however. A happy sounding track at first listen combines dream-like melodies with dark lyrics describing his love/hate relationship with a girl he can’t seem to get rid of. A favorite line of mine is “She says like literally, music is the air she breathes / and the Malaprops make me want to fucking scream / I wonder if she even knows what that word means, well it’s “literally” not that.” His snide remarks about his female companion get so harsh towards the end of the song before he regretfully belts “Why don’t you move to the Delta / I obliged later on, when you begged me to choke you.”
If you aren’t paying attention to the work of Father John Misty yet, I feel sorry for you. I personally can’t name another musician I’m aware of making as beautiful and honest of music as J. Tillman, aka Father John Misty.
