Is there moral goodness, what is goodness to you?
Absolutely. There is so much good. Of course moral goodness exists. I mean I’ve definitely felt overwhelmed by moments where I think corruption is rampant, because it is. But within every instance of injustice, there’s an opportunity for goodness to come out of it. Maybe I’m saying this from a place of privilege, but despite how horrible corruption and inequality effect people, there’s a lot of powerful conversation happening right now on how to end it. This is totally cliche and I’m under the influence of a really good bubble bath right now, but I truly believe it. Being able to find light within truly horrible moments– that’s what I think is morally good. Oh and pop music, non-dairy ice cream, really satisfying hugs, all creatures and most humans– those are also v good things too.

How do you manage ennui?
I think it is important to let yourself feel ennui. Sometimes it’s your body’s and mind’s way of saying that you need to lay in bed, eat an entire bag of cheetos and watch 47 episodes of the Kardashians. However, doing that can be really paralyzing, so I made a list of things I can do to feel excited, (listening to my friend’s music, reading about plate tectonics, looking at pics of dogs, dying my hair, thinking about Kanye West, touching a lot of glitter). If you can’t get past it on your own, I’ve found that talking about it really helps. Not like in a ‘go to therapy and talk about it’’ kind of way, because talk therapy sucks, but in a text your friend and say, “hey today hurts (at best) and I’d like to cease existing” kind of way. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that, I’m on the internet and you can talk to me.
I feel ennui a lot. It used to really get me down, but at some point I realized that if I don’t allow myself to feel uncomfortable emotions, I won’t feel their counterparts as intensely. If you’ve never felt it yourself, you likely will, and if you have, you’ll certainly feel it again. But feeling ennui, that all encompassing lull of dissatisfaction– is not the problem, or at least it shouldn’t be. It’s harrowing and omnipresent, but once you figure out how to manifest your emotional void into something palatable those feelings of ennui can be pretty cool.
Is your existence as compared to your nonexistence something which can be justified?
When I was 14, my science teacher began a lecture by saying that everything we see and feel doesn’t exist. The chairs we were sitting on didn’t exist in their present form, they were just a coincidental combination of accidental atoms. A few years later, I learned that our eyes see everything upside down and it’s our brain that puts it into perspective. That really freaked me out, because I guess nothing around us is what we perceive it to be, and everything we think is true is only true because we see it as such. It’s so weird. Like, my body is just a cool lil sack of organs operated by this weird lil grey blob, and so is yours. Science says we exist, so I guess we do.
Are you afraid that everything will happen?
It’s gonna happen. Everything is gonna happen,
I’m totally afraid, but I’m also really excited.
“I think, therefore I am” or “I am, therefore I think”
I think I exist. Or, I exist, I think.
I think I only exist because I think I exist.
This question makes me feel dizzy.
