I think something really cool that’s happening in Chicago right now is the constant bending of genre lines to a place that’s unique to each artist popping onto the scene. Of course there are your overlaps in sounds and intentions but it’s really great to see a group that is creating their own lane and sticking true to their artistic core. As I listened through Death By Icon’s initial album ‘Trybecca’ I heard 3 dudes coming from extremely diverse musical backgrounds to find a middle ground through the lens of hip hop and they surprised the community with how mature of an album it was. With Gusto, the first single off their follow-up ‘Hassah’ Ant, Vic, and Drew continue pushing the sonic envelope to bring anthemic sounds and step outside the boundaries we’ve been told are set within the hip-hop community.
