Brooklyn White has just released her first project since November 2016, tackling issues such as Black womanhood, spirituality, romance, and the importance/role of self. I had the pleasure of asking her a few questions, you can read the full interview below.
Can you tell me more about the importance of self and how that comes into play on this tape?
I’ve been focused on myself and personal growth for about a year. This journey within the big life journey has been about peeping my part in the grand scheme of things and also seeing how I affect myself. Like how my behavior makes me feel, what I genuinely enjoy doing, etc. I feel like if I can know and be at peace with me, everything else is jiggy.
Do you have tips or advice for people that are trying to understand themselves better?
Don’t be afraid to fail. Failure is usually just a test run for a future, positive event. And get to the root of things. Figure out why you hate the smell of oranges. Think about your background. Peep patterns. Just pay attention.
Can you tell me about your approach to spirituality? do you have any rigid unshakeable beliefs?
So Don (who produced this album) and I bonded over our spiritual beliefs from jump. We actually did our very first collaborative track last summer and it was a gospel joint. Anyways, I think two of the big staples in our approach are music and prayer. Simple yet highly effective; music soothes the spirit and mind and can be like a 5 minute affirmation and prayer helps you stay centered. An unshakeable belief is that God is real.
Are there any particular inspirations at play on this project?
Honestly, no! I mentioned to Don that I wanted some stuff to sound like we were in outer space, but I don’t think we weren’t particularly influenced by any sound. That’s never been the case for my music before..interesting.
You cited space as a kind of inspiration – are there any other non-musical influences?
Yeah, good energy. It’s a powerful influence – possibly the most powerful influence.
Who do you wanna reach or connect with using these songs?
People with jobs they wanna quit. People with insecurities. People who have dreams. People who aren’t afraid to feel. Real people!!!
Me.
I feel like the strivers don’t get enough love.
Do you have any final words for our readers?
I just wanna formally announce that Don and I are a duo! We are WaveCap.
