Puerto Rico’s princess of rap, Audri Nix, released her long awaited debut EP El Nuevo Orden Vol. 1 on Tuesday with a short visual showcasing some of the projects material. Executive produced by her main collaborator Overlord, the project features 3 unreleased songs that showcase several different sounds Nix is capable of. “El Nuevo Orden” means “the new order”, which symbolizes a takeover of Nix and Overlord in the emerging Puerto Rican rap market as well as serves as a reference to The New World Order, a popular conspiracy theory which believes a small group of wealthy world figures are in cahoots to slaughter much of the lower-class humans of the world. Ironically enough, the music is sometimes as dark and mysterious as the conspiracy itself.
It’s hard for me to appreciate the lyrics of Miss. Nix, since I don’t speak Spanish, but they sure sound elegant and beautiful to a non-Spanish speaking gringo like myself. In the same way I can appreciate Nix’s rapping even though I can’t fully understand her subject matter, I can appreciate an artist like Young Thug who routinely sacrifices any subject matter for melodic purposes. And though I’m sure she’s got a message behind her lyrics, all I’m saying is for someone who can’t understand the music, I can still rock with it. Where I can’t understand the lyrics, I can fully understand the production of Overlord. His heavy hitting bass and often afterlife-sounding tones pack a powerful punch behind Nix’s voice. If you can’t appreciate the Spanish rapping, you’ll undoubtedly be able to groove with the production behind it.
