Many of Chicago’s most creative young artists found home, mentorship and an opportunity to grow and improve their writing and performing skills at Young Chicago Authors. The annual Louder Than A Bomb poetry slam founded by YCA’s Artistic Director Kevin Coval and poet and former YCA Executive Director Anna West gathers the best and brightest in a friendly competition and the winners go on to represent Chicago at the national level. On Kevin Coval’s website LTAB is described “By carrying on the rich tradition of oral storytelling and the spoken word, this competition historically engages more than 350 youth participants representing over 40 schools and community centers to share stories, break stereotypes, and speak the truth, challenging themselves and their audience.”
I loved the documentary Louder Than A Bomb that came out in 2011 by filmmakers Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel, be sure to check that out here. The #LTAB2015 mixtape is a compilation of tracks by some of the most relevant and powerful voices currently creating in Chicago. I am familiar with some of these records, but several are new to me and this is a great listen and introduction to some of the city’s best.
