In the years since this interview was released Hot Sugar has been outed as a serial sexual abuser.
Hot Sugar is a music producer who lives in New York City. He produced my favorite Deniro Farrar song.
What is the importance of space exploration in our society?
Like Neil said, it was our curiosity & thirst for exploration that got us out of the caves. We’re not cavemen anymore but in the grand scope of things, we havent gotten much farther than that. Earth is just one planet. We have many more planets and galaxies to ruin with our purposeless and wasteful trail as a species.
Do you worry about the heat death of the universe?
No. Aside from all of us (and all tangential ancestry) being dead by then, I’m pretty sure humans will have evolved into a completely different creature by then so I’m more curious about what the dominant species will look like in the future. Over the past few years in my boredom I’ve come up with cool evolutionary upgrades that I hope to see humanity adopt and I wish there were a way to know if they’ll come true.
Like what?
Beavers have an additional pair of eyelids: A normal pair like us and then other transparent eyelids underneath so that they can swim through muddy waters with their eyes closed but seeing through them at the same time. I think we would look cool with two pairs of eyelids. Maybe one pair of eyelids would just be the 3d movie glasses or would help us not get headaches when looking at our phones. Also it would be cool to wink with two different eyelids on one eye.
What defines consciousness? Do you think other animals can be considered conscious creatures?
I used to care about this question growing up but not really anymore because Consciousness (referring to the most modern scientific definitions, not the “politically informed, aware-of-conspiracy-theories” sense of the word) doesn’t make me respect a thing.
Moss (for example) is a living organism but probably not conscious, yet I think it looks really pretty and is relaxing when I stare at it.
If someone tore up a bunch of moss for no reason while I was staring at it (either to prove how superior they were or just to piss me off) it would make me sad and I would be upset at that person.
I would rather go on a roadtrip with a piece of moss than the person who consciously tore up the moss.
How do you create meaningful experience in your life?
When you look at a piece of moss on the forest floor, that the moss is trying to spread into new territory. Like any living organism, its only real purpose is to consume (water, photosynthesis, etc.) and spread (or reproduce). To moss, that lifestyle is enough of a meaningful experience for it to “keep going” and not just give up. I try to be like Moss AKA not give a fuck.
How do you manage ennui?
I try to stay distracted and focused at the same time. First I distract myself then I focus on the concept of distraction until it leads me to a place (a thought) I could never get to otherwise. Sometimes I end up in a beautiful, unexplored territory and other times I recognize that I’m just wasting time, but it all stems from the fact that I’m desperately escaping the futility of life as it chases me.
Is your existence as compared to your nonexistence something which can be justified?
Nope. I’m as meaningless as anything else. All I can do while I’m here is try to make cool things that help distract other people from their meaninglessness.
Are you afraid that everything will happen?
Nope. Who cares.
“I think, therefore I am” or “I am, therefore I think”
True. But even though you “are” doesnt mean you matter.
Sartre posits that the existence of desire is the best proof that humans are basically in a state of “lacking”, if man were “what he is(a being-in-itself)”, he would not need anything to complete him. Is there anything that can make a human complete?
Nope.
Do you think trends are accelerating faster than ever ?
Yes. Unique people will always exist and will always curate their own style (in fashion, thought, art, discourse, etc.) but the branding of trends has increased due to the fact that said process yields several microcelebrities.
A trend gives an excuse for clickbait journalists to document said trend, thereby validating the creator of that trend into thinking they are an influencer (since they are being documented by “the press”). It also provides the journalist with the sensation and perceived respect attributed to making a discovery in their field (discovering a new trend). In the end, both the journalist and the creator of the trend feel socially & maybe even professionally influential. Its a tacit, mutually beneficial partnership by two subjects incentivised by our media dominated society, yearning for social relevance.
how can the net amount of entropy of the universe be massively decreased?
We can all die.
Is factory farming sustainable or ethical?
Sustainable: Probably
Ethical: Definitely Not. Take them out their cages and let them play with the moss instead.
Lastly, what do you think about this poem by Paul Celan (below)
That poem will not apply once we evolve to incorporate the new eyelid I proposed.
True.
