Last night I stumbled across Jakarta Records affiliate Juju Rogers on a late night music binge which lasted about 4 hours and headed into the sun rising. At that point I wasn’t even tired, I was so excited about the music I was finding, old and new, that I started falling in Love with the search again. See for me, having been a music addict for about 18 years now I sort of fell into a slump of an underwhelmed, annoyed consumer. In my mind I justified it as “Music sucks now.” and “Why are all these shitty musicians becoming famous?” and any other excuse from a self-righteous music critic that believes there still hasn’t been a better guitarist than Jimi Hendrix (which is true) or misses when jazz was actually party music that made people get up and dance. Juju Rogers is a German based MC that can hold his own with the best of the lyrical giants surfacing today. I was surprised to hear how unique his cadence was while consistently keeping the story flowing which in my opinion is reminiscent of early Nas. His latest album “From the Life of a Good for Nothing” is a strong statement and hopefully it reaches the ears it needs to to bring this man across the pond. Sometimes sitting back and waiting for something happen induces apathy and dismissiveness, and that’s where I was. So I encourage anyone reading this, in anything you do, research and put the time in actively pursuing what your passionate about because in the end you will acquire a greater reward.
