KLSLWSK is a dance producer from Seattle who was kind enough to answer some philosophical questions for the blog. Shout out to his squad at Manicure Records.
What defines consciousness? Do you think other animals can be considered conscious creatures?
Yeah, some. Maybe all of them. Not in the same sense humans are, but being able to like think about or somehow process making a choice, even a really simple one, that’s a conscious decision that something could act out of its own free will. Instinct could be the opposite of consciousness so insects might just turn out to be robots, but I don’t think an animal needs to be self aware to be considered conscious.
How do you create meaningful experience in your life?
It just happens and I try to recognize them as they come along. I also like cooking and walking around in the woods.
How do you manage ennui?
I make stuff.
Like Sartre, do you consider contemplation a luxury?
I didn’t until I got a blue collar job.
How has the absurdity of the world increased in your lifetime?
Well I think after staring at a computer for my entire childhood the transition between American consumer demographics is particularly awkward. Everybody everywhere is surrounded, like totally immersed in ridiculousness. It feels like I’m living in some fucked up fantasy world. Desire to get $$ from 20-year-olds through reinventing advertising is taking artistic expression and all kinds of media to new heights. I’m really learning to appreciate the feeling of Uncanny Valley, video ads are one of those super ridiculous things. Very often it doesn’t seem like they’re made by or for real people.
Are you afraid that everything will happen?
Mostly that it won’t happen soon enough or it has already somewhere else.
How do you make earnest connection in a world of instant gratification?
Easy, just smoke weed with your friends and be honest with yourself and others. Love ya :*
