Louisiana isn’t known for being the home of tons and tons of well-known artists, although they have had a few natives that have popped off as generational icons over the past few decades. Baton Rouge native, Wakai, could be one of those rare cases. The artist combines an original 90’s oriented visual experience where his musical influences of southern hip-hop, blues and jazz, and neo-soul live and can be perceived from his perspective. This creates an extremely nostalgic yet progressive listening experience.
Last Monday, Wakai released his first single “Lively,” from his upcoming project “To a Dark Boy.” The track is filled with quick-witted, storytelling bars and an honest and catchy chorus. If you are a fan of next-generation, off-the-cuff artists such as Mick Jenkins, Saba, or reggie, Wakai is a must-listen. If you are already hip to Wakai you are most likely patiently waiting for his next project to release, but if this is your time listening, go back and check our his last project, “Away Game, Vol. 2.”
For now, enjoy “Lively” and keep your eyes out for “To a Dark Boy.”
