At this point, Travis Scott’s artistic influence is undeniable as part of music’s legacy. Now I continually have pretty heated debates with friends about if this man is trash or a legend (I usually go as far as a god) and the arguments against are usually shit. NOBODY IS SAYING THIS MAN IS A LYRICAL MASTERMIND and I think with Travis Scott it’s okay that he doesn’t have the most eloquent or witty bars because it doesn’t really matter what he’s saying. This man is a composer at this highest caliber. Like his mentor, Dr. Kanye Omari West, Travis has taken their music to a level that is so beyond rap that to me it’s frivolous to even classify it as that. Yeah bars are tight and if you’re trying to pigeon hole Travis into the tiny world of rap music then I think you have a right to be disappointed. But if you think about his efforts as a producer to push sound into a direction that has a little more depth then it’s undeniable he is a staple of our generation. You can miss old Kanye all you want but that’s not coming back because he has decided to invest his efforts into not just rap but sonically stand at the edge of pop sensibility and Travis is standing right next to him.
This music video is your basic women, cars, and a lone rapper smoking blunts while flexing in dirt but I think as you watch this you can see Scott’s taste is a little higher than most other “rappers” today.
