It’s a little overwhelming sometimes to think about just how much we have at the literal tips of our fingertips. Whereas I just sit and space out when I try to take in an amateur Photoshop tutorial, LA-based multidimensional artist mykel seems to have the art of mastering multiple crafts via the worldwide web down to a science. After some life changes that resulted in mykel having to take on a broader role in his artistry, he spent — what will eventually be a legendary week — learning how to do his own animations in the form of modeling and world building. As an independent artist, making due with the resources you have is one of the most critical skillsets a person can possess, and instead of paying out of pocket, mykel took it upon himself to learn what he’d otherwise have to field quotes and portfolios for. And the results? Absolutely impeccable. “vomit!” is a 96 second experience accompanied by graphics parlayed into something that more so resembles a demo reel of a PlayStation 2 video game as opposed to being the music video for a single. Nonetheless, I am absolutely here for it.
Having gone through the previously mentioned phase of change, mykel is dead set on spreading his vision to encapsulate more than just music. Aside from the visual representation for his sound, he’s launching his website today that features shirts, posters, and more, and he even recently shared with me, via text, that, “[I] have plans of building toys, action figures, plushies, fingerboards”. It looks like mykel is going to have plenty to keep himself busy over the coming months and years, and I’m genuinely excited to see how things develop.
Follow mykel on Instagram for the latest on audio/visual and Twitter for rollouts and releases. mykel has a lot in store, including an upcoming 3 track EP with Southern California singer-songwriter and producer Maki Adams that we’ll be sure to cover upon release.
