What happens when an online community creates such a unique experience that it has no other choice but to bring it to a larger audience? Goop Fest. This Saturday, August 28th, music fans can head to goop.house for a unique and altruistic URL show experience. The lineup is jampacked with some of today’s most talked about artists (underscores, umru, fraxiom, left at london, and many more) and every artist in between is talented in their own right. All proceeds from the event are going toward The International Railroad for Queer Refugees and other charities.
Shirin, the founder of Goop House, talked to us on Discord briefly about the journey from server to massive community and now URL festival. It’s worth noting that the format for this event is different from most festivals. Each headlining artist is broken up into a different set, with 3-4 artists performing before them. For more info on show flow, see the attached flyer.
1833: What was your inspiration for Goop Fest? And how long has the server been active for?
SHIRIN: i started to form the idea for goop fest after goop house started to gain some traction in the scene. every time i go though and listen to each of the collective albums, the sheer amount of talent is staggering, from musicians of all sizes. a huge part of what inspired me to put on goop fest was those smaller artists. goop house has always been about pushing up artists and supporting each other in the community, and with goop fest it’s the same– i really wanted to use the influence i had gained to give some of those artists a platform.
1833: It’s cool that you decided to use the platform as an opportunity to raise awareness and donate to causes you and the community are passionate about. Can you talk a little about that?
SHIRIN: in this day and age it becomes really easy to feel helpless against the constant waves of injustice and cruelty in the world. the suffering feels too great. but coming from a background of nonprofit work, i know that the best way to fight against that feeling is to collectivize our efforts and do whatever we can to help others. i hope that though goop fest i can really instill that feeling in everyone that as a collective scene, we can accomplish things that would normally be beyond our individual reach.
