Existential Little Interviews Vol. 52: Hellion

On the heels of his newest release ‘Lightless‘, I was able to ask Hellion a little about his thoughts on various things.

How do you create meaningful experience in your life?

Do whatever you want to do.

Are you afraid that everything will happen?

Everything that needs to happen is already happening.

What gives you the right?

I don’t like your tone.

How do you make earnest connection in a world of instant gratification?

Patience

Is there moral goodness, what is goodness to you?

Everyone knows right from wrong but people still say and do dumb shit everyday.

Existential Little Interviews Vol. 51: Classical Trax

I asked Matt some existential questions. Classical Trax is not a label and he is not the label head.

Is there moral goodness, what is goodness to you?

Yes I believe, everyone in the world has moral goodness, it is up to them, and whether they choose to use it or not. Goodness is a word!

What is the importance of space exploration in our society?

Space exploration is very important, because maybe we can figure out why the guy from True Detective was behind the bookcase.

Do you worry about the heat death of the universe?

Nope, unless DJ Slimzee brings back Slimzos Recordings

What is time? What is Macaroni Time?

Time doesn’t matter, Macaroni Time is something Chief Keef mades and it transcends time

Are you afraid that everything will happen?

Everything is already happening, but I don’t have the power to stop it

“I think, therefore I am” or “I am, therefore I think”

I am a music fan, therefore I think I can be a established musician but really I just know what the word computer means.

Do you think trends are accelerating faster than ever ?

Yes I actually think it can be quite a problem, especially with music 🙁

Existential Little Interviews Vol. 50: Wasaaga.

What is the importance of space exploration in our society?

Space exploration is so crucial. People tend to freak out about exploration, because of the endlessness of it, not to mention the risk. I think it’s a necessary risk. Sure, fending for our own as a planet is important, but the underlying questions of why we’re here in the first place are out there. I think Astronauts are some of the bravest men on Earth. Risking their lives to answer questions we could never find here. It’s one of the most noble things you can do as a resident of the planet. I want to go so bad. Someone Lance-Bass me up there.

What is time? What is Macaroni Time?

Time is a fallacy. Macaroni time is all the time.

Many Existentialist define existence as being-in-the-world or being-with-others. What do you think is the role of community, in relation to the development of one’s self?

Something I’ve learned over the past few years is that community is crucial to self-development. I used to always keep my recordings to myself; it was a very personal process. Generally speaking, it still is (the creation process, at least), but I’ve opened myself up thanks to the love, support, and feedback I’ve gotten from my inner circle and the rest of the community. We’re all just doing our own thing, but finding a community that embraces your value in whatever you do will instill more drive for you to do great work. Not to mention these people can always help inspire your work – I learn so much from my friends and peers at Vacation Pay and elsewhere that I apply to my own work. We’re all we’ve got.

Do you think trends are accelerating faster than ever ?

In a way, yes. It’s more so that the internet provides us with way more trends than we’ve ever seen, and their life spans seem significantly shorter. We have a much easier opportunity to become “bored” with a trend because we’re constantly overloaded with them. Trends used to be dictated by social hierarchy, but now-a-days, in theory, anyone with a proper internet connection can create a trend if they try hard enough. I mean, we have communities for grown ass men obsessed with My Little Pony (no disrespect to the Bronies). Literally anything can become a trend with the right audience. Shoutout JNCO Jeans, though.

How can the net amount of entropy of the universe be massively decreased?*

To be honest, it can’t, and I think that’s an amazing thing. Obviously it has it’s negative implications, but we’re ever-expanding, and entropy and absurdity is just another part of that. I love seeing and hearing about things that seem absurd because it represents progress, for better or for worse. Could you imagine how ridiculous the idea of a croakie was initially? “You want me to wear my sunglasses like a necklace? What are you, high?!” Now, boat dads all over are rocking the croakie. Progress is progress.

Existential Little Interviews Vol. 49: dd elle

dd elle could be a new name for you, but he is not new to the scene. He has worked with 1833 favorites like Squadda B (Main Attrakionz) and has done remixes for big talents such as Majical Cloudz and The xx.

Do you worry about the heat death of the universe?

Not at all – but i’d prefer the big crunch, tbh.
Returning to the singularity is a comforting idea.
Cycles seem real and everywhere.

What defines consciousness? Do you think other animals can be considered conscious creatures?

I don’t think there is a line in the sand.
My dog is my best friend and he’s aware of so much but he also doesn’t seem to recognize himself in a mirror, i don’t know. Painting elephants on youtube make a strong case, though.

How do you create meaningful experience in your life?

I don’t, you can’t.
It happens without your hand.
Forcing anything removes the meaningfulness to me.

How do you make earnest connection in a world of instant gratification?

Dying.

Existential Little Interviews Vol. 48: LORD PUSSWHIP

Pumpkins01

In your opinion does this photograph of a pumpkin:

  1. Reflect a profound reality (A picture of pumpkin is like the real thing)
  2. Mask and denature a profound reality (A picture of the pumpkin is like a shitty version of the real thing.)
  3. Mask the absence of a profound reality (the pumpkin was a lie.)
  4. Lose all connection to reality, becoming pure simulation (Pumpkins, as a natural phenomenon, are a lie and this picture I just handed you is just a napkin that I peed on.)
  5. All of the Above

Source: UNDERSTANDING JEAN BAUDRILLARD WITH PUMPKIN SPICE LATTES

In my opinion this photograph of a pumpkin loses all connection to reality, becoming pure simulation – if I understand Baudrilliard correctly after reading a shitty university translation in Icelandic once. As a picture on a screen it only represents the thing itself, however it is only a simulation. I’m not sure that means pumpkins themselves are straight lies although I am sure that you peed on your screen, perv.
My brother talked a lot about Baudrilliard and I’ve read some of his theories and I realize his impact on pop culture and philosophy. I think rigid, bookish philosopher-types in universities consider him and other “post-modernists” to be a bunch of dudes who compete in saying the most outlandish stuff in a philosophical context in order to get themselves on the news. Still I think Baudrilliard was extremely on point when it comes to modern Western society. For example, whenever people experience catastophres such as natural disasters, terrorist attacks or trainwrecks they will almost invariably tell the media: “It felt so unreal, just like in a movie.” I think that’s what hyperreality is about. Also – he called 9/11 the greatest work of art of all time and he said the Gulf War never happened – both very convincing remarks.

Like Sartre, do you consider contemplation a luxury?

I guess in some sense contemplation is a luxury, that is: education and the contemplation that comes along with that is a luxury. Futurologists back in the day thought that by 2015, no one would have to work and everyone would have time for education and leisure. They were wrong in the sense that we are still slaves but then again computers are taking over more and more jobs. We’re living in a weird time – like living right BEFORE that crazy ass future those peeps a 100 years ago thought today would look like. But we’re seeing glimpses of it now. Sorry if I digressed there.

Are you afraid that everything will happen?

I’m simultaneously looking forward to and despairing over everything happening, when everything is going to happen. It’s a scary, wonderful and contradictory thought.

How do you make an earnest connection in a world of instant gratification?

Love or loathe the people around you and listen to their stories.

Do you think anything is absolute? If so, what?

Ideas, poetry and art!! It’s amazing to influence how people think! Everyone knows the best art and poetry is timeless. Good or bad ideas can result in an endless spiralling chain of events that might end up influencing everyone’s life who’ll ever live. That’s crazy. Life + the world is crazy and we’re crazy. Fuck you, fuck with me xxxx

Existential Little Interviews Vol. 47: Marcy Mane

Is there moral goodness, what is goodness to you?

There is moral goodness, goodness is being god like.

How do you manage ennui?

Im always too busy to even manage ennui. Had to look up ennui in the dictionary.

Is your existence as compared to your nonexistence something which can be justified?

Yeah I’m alive answering these whack questions.

Riff Raff and Donald Trump can be seen as tangible examples of increased absurdity (aka entropy) in the universe, can you name other examples?

Nah, Riff Raff is tight these questions are absurd.

Are you afraid that everything will happen?

Are you?

Ya.

Existential Little Interviews Vol. 46: JOULE$

Is there moral goodness, what is goodness to you?

I believe in dualism the split between good and evil, which is what I consider raw forms of right and wrong. Moral goodness could be different depending on beliefs and perspectives, so really there’s no true answer to this because anything can be right and anything can be wrong in the eyes of the person witness.

What is the importance of space exploration in our society?

I think this is something we should invest more time and money into. The world is deteriorating at a faster rate every day & I hate to say this but humans really are like a virus to planets our sole purpose is to survive and a human’s natural instinct will do anything to ensure the life span it was destined to live. And I mean anything whether it be destroying natural habitats for more living quarters or even just the slaughter of countless animals we have led to extinction for expensive material objects and/or human consumption. This leads me to my main point, space exploration will eventually be necessary to sustain and keep the human race alive.

What defines consciousness? Do you think other animals can be considered conscious creatures?

Knowing one exists through thoughts, reflection and creation. Realizing that as a god, human, ape you are capable of many things that many animals could never even achieve. I always say we are the most blessed beings in the universe for being so conscious and aware of our surroundings. To the people who share this and don’t just live their lives day to day, I salute you. I would not be able to answer if all animals are conscious creatures but I do see emotions when an animal hurts or loses something so it leads me to believe that they are conscious due to reactions, responses and consequence.

How do you create meaningful experience in your life?

Unless you are in control of the situation meaningful experiences usually happen through living how you want and how you’re supposed to. The closer you get to finding your niche the easier it is for things to become meaningful to you because you see them as more valuable lessons rather than day to day events. You see the progress from the point in which you began your journey to what you’ve become through meaningful experiences so I’d say just be yourself and do what you love.

How do you manage ennui?

If I don’t have something to do my purpose here is weak and I refuse to allow that.
As an artist and someone who believes in hard work I hardly ever experience trouble finding occupation.

What gives you the right?

The fact that I have a message to spread, in a world where substance lacks I feel like I can provide that and more. My creativity is very unique you can see it in my work ethic and the legacy I have left behind. My purpose in my head remains the same, to impact the world and cause change. That’s my mentality everyday when I wake up. Therefore, I have the right. If you can think it, you can do it.

Existential Little Interviews Vol. 45: Ivy Hollivana

Ivy Hollivana sings, produces, and even writes and illustrates a webcomic.

Do you worry about the heat death of the universe?

I live in a very hot place and my first day of my senior year of high school this year it was hotter than the usual hot :'< it was very scary and I looked up at the sun ((don’t do that!!)) and told her to calm down but it’s just getting worse!!! I’m scared for the polar bears more though, to be honest.

What defines consciousness? Do you think other animals can be considered conscious creatures?

All my dogs knew when I was crying they were supposed to be with me and sniff me lovingly and cuddle up to me so i think what defines consciousness is the want to protect others!!

How do you manage ennui?

I can never be bored while talking with friends because I always have something to share!! Also working on music and art is a good calming place to be. Being in any safe-space is really relaxing to me, and i do my best to make sure I’m there every day!

What is time? What is Macaroni Time?

The time between wanting macaroni and actually getting macaroni is a tough time for me. But when you make the sauce for it in a lil cup and you taste the cheese it is a good time! so I’m conflicted……

Are you afraid that everything will happen?

ABSOLUTELY !! I’m afraid of a lot of things and there’s stuff I can’t even think of that will happen and that’s super scary!! Life is very fast and scary and all I want is some MACARONI.

Existential Little Interviews Vol. 44: Amber-Simone

Amber-Simone is an ever so talented singer/songwriter, born and raised in London, who has opened for John Legend several times this year. She’s also got some great tunage.

Do you worry about the heat death of the universe?

I find theories such as these very interesting… questioning the possibilities of how the earth may come to its end as well as other theories questioning it beginning. However, I do not let things such as this worry me… there are much bigger things to worry about in the now rather than ponder on inconclusive theories, that practically will never be proven.

What defines consciousness? Do you think other animals can be considered conscious creatures?

I believe that consciousness varies and progresses in different stages. To one person it could mean to possess the ability to feel and experience physical and emotional changes… whether it pain, love, empathy; the list goes on. When it comes to animals and other living things I definitely do believe that they are considered conscious creatures.

In other situations it could be said that consciousness is just energy. Everything that is and ever will be… like the life in the trees and the power of the sun. Energy never dies it simply just changes its form. You could go onto to argue that ideas such as higher powers are an overview of the unity of all the universes energy summed in a singular word… ‘God’ universally understood as the ultimate consciousness.

How do you create meaningful experience in your life?

To me, life is about making memories and living experiences more over indulging in material things. I’d like to think that I’m quite adventurous and open-minded, the experiences we have in life are massive changing factors onto who we ultimately become. I think to make an experience meaningful it must change us in a way… whether it just a memory that stays with us or part of something that made us grow and understand ourselves a little more.

How do you manage ennui?

I think it’s so important to remain self-motivated and create long term and short-term goals to keep focus. Setting myself challenges and having a desire to improve myself is something that always keeps me occupied.

“I think, therefore I am” or “I am, therefore I think”

I think, therefore I am.

How do you make earnest connection in a world of instant gratification?

I don’t believe that our world is completely of instant gratification.

Existential Little Interviews Vol. 43: verytrue

Is there moral goodness, what is goodness to you?

Moral goodness exists in my life. Yet, it’s pretty subjective. Goodness: the products of respect, honesty, loyalty, and decency. I’m a human, you respect my life, are honesty with me about my bullshit (and yours too, for that matter), you have the decency to give me a heads up when something bad is coming my way, and you’re loyal to whatever type of relationship we’ve built.

Do you worry about the heat death of the universe?

Yes, now that you ask, I do. We waste hella energy on bullshit all day & these phones?! It’s pretty much a wrap.

How do you create meaningful experience in your life?

Meaningful experience happens when I learn something from interacting with others. I place a lot of value on my interaction with people in general. Whether it’s romantic, platonic, familiar, or strange. I believe I can/will learn something from it all. When I struggle or get stuck it’s a meaningful, it’s life. This shit is all about the “how” to me, not the what. Instead of being depressed, angry or whatever, I focus on what I’m supposed to be learning. Then I’m content. That’s how I make it all mean something.

How do you manage ennui?

I pretty much never get bored unless I’m in class w/o my MacBook. I always feel like there’s something I need to be doing so I’d have to be without any music, phone, laptop or table to become bored and even then I’d just paint. Or figure out some way to create something. Wow, I could just throw out that stuff & create tangible things. But then, no.

Do you think anything is absolute? If so, what?

Idiots and change, duh.

Many Existentialist define existence as being-in-the-world or being-with-others. What do you think is the role of community, in relation to the development of one’s self?

Being with others. We’re all here to learn, love, and grow. That’s just how I feel. everyone else here is supposed to help me grow, thus I love better, teach others through my experience, affect them positively or negatively, and vice versa. I believe being with others is simultaneous development. Of course, one can regress in some areas depending on the company one keeps. Alas, development is the dependent variable.

verytrue

Existential Little Interviews Vol. 42: Eazy

Is there moral goodness, what is goodness to you?

Moral goodness is a thing but not everyone abides to it, goodness to me is doing what I would want to be done to me; placing myself in other people’s shoes because you never know what that person could be going through so everybody should always be nice all the time. Swag.

What defines consciousness? Do you think other animals can be considered conscious creatures?

Being conscious is being aware that everything in the world revolves around this thing we call energy. An example would be noticing how certain coincidences aren’t really coincidences but just moments in time that were meant to happen at that exact spot and at that exact time where you just so happen to be in. Every living thing is energy and the same energy you project into the universe affects the overall consciousness of yourself and the universe. Other animals are conscious I think but in a way we don’t fully understand because they’re a different species knawimsayin knawimsayin??

How do you create meaningful experience in your life?

I like going outside and appreciating how beautiful the universe is, like looking at how crazy the clouds in the sky look sometimes and how the sunset makes hella different colors in the sky. Also just doing whatever makes me happy, nobody wants to do anything they don’t enjoy so I just try to stay positive by looking at and experiencing things I like. I dropped acid at a secret beach the other day and the insight I gained from that experience alone is hard to explain but my senses were heightened and I could feel the energy moving through my body, you should try it if you’re reading this whoever you are.

Many Existentialist define existence as being-in-the-world or being-with-others. What do you think is the role of community, in relation to the development of one’s self?

Everybody and the energy they put out all comes together to form a higher being. We are all taking part in forming this higher entity by the energy that we are putting out. We are all one, connected through the conscious mind. Not everyone is conscious (though we’re making progress) therefore people without open minds tend to follow trends and are easily influenced by whatever is being projected on the media(TV, social media, news) rather than thinking for themselves critically.

“I think, therefore I am” or “I am, therefore I think”?

i think, therefore I am. The universe and your mind are actually connected in such a way that whatever you think, will be manifested into your life. I’ve had experiences where I just have a feeling a certain event is going to happen, without knowing when or where or how, and to my amazement it happens in due time. If you leave everything in the hands of the universe, it’ll work in a way to help you attain whatever it is you desire, for this one must be patient. All I can say is open your mind, think for yourself, and try to stay as positive as you can because before you think of how a situation could be better, it could always be worse.

Existential Little Interviews Vol. 41: Ba-kuura

What is the importance of space exploration in our society?

As dope as space exploration is I really think we got enough to learn about our own planet. At the same time I would love for someone to discover some extraterrestrials/ultraterrestials or evidence thereof so idk man. I do feel like space exploration is really gonna help us figure out what the fuck we’re all doing here, so I’d say it’s important.

How do you create meaningful experience in your life?

Stay posi, aware (not too aware tho), surround yourself with beautiful people, beautiful art, baja blast and always be working towards something bigger than you.

What is time? What is Macaroni Time?

Time is a man made vice. Macaroni time is when I got to bojangles and order the number 1 with a side of macaroni

Riff Raff  has been called a tangible example of increased absurdity (aka entropy) in the universe, can you name other examples?

Riff Raff isn’t THAT weird to me. Personally I think he just kinda capitalized on ‘weirdness’ for the sake of viral exposure and publicity. Plenty of people do that. The most interesting ‘weird’ artist to me would probably be the author Philip K. Dick. Dude was writing about early forms of the internet and suggesting we all might live in a simulated reality in the 1970’s. Not to mention he claimed multiple times he received divine inspiration from aliens. I could keep going on and on about weird ass authors tho, I love that shit.

*Editorial Note: I love PKD!! Have you read the 3 Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch ?

Do you think trends are accelerating faster than ever ?

Yesssss. Shouts out to the internet for putting every new trend up front and in your face for everybody to jump into instantly. These trends come off so new and welcoming but are literally beaten to death and  oversaturated within a year. There’s a v small period of time where a trend can maintain any exclusivity. So ppl that lean towards counter-culture have just kinda become hyper trend-hopping shape shifters. It’s strange tbh…

Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun?

Tbh I think whoever/whatever created us had the sponge up on some pedestal that they thought was out of our reach. But humanity hit a growth spurt in the last few decades (probably for the worst) and we just kinda reached up and took it. But we didn’t kill god, we’ve just started realizing we don’t need to rely on religious crutches. We don’t need an invisible friend or the promise of an afterlife to find purpose in ourselves anymore and it’s beautiful. we are all yung gods, we have the ability to create whatever
