I had the pleasure of getting an advance listen to Sean Nicholas Savage’s “Other Death” which is being released by Arbutus Records September 18th.
Soft Keys with a beautiful progression emerge from the black, this is the “death” of the author and the birth of the reader; we the listener can only interpret these keys as what they mean to us individually. The beauty of it all can leave one breathless. Sean Nicholas Savage is on to something.
With a beautifully unique high toned voice and off kilter approach to songwriting Sean Nicholas separates himself from the competition.
This is his third studio album in three years following the critically acclaimed ‘Other Life’ (2013) and ‘Bermuda Waterfall’ (2014) respectively. It is a soft heart warming album with intelligent lyrics and avant garde melodies.
His range in covering styles and influences is seemingly endless, “1 More Chance” sounds like an indie Michael Jackson song while songs like “Propaganda” evoke thought of fellow Arbitus Records label mate Grimes.
“Seems like everybody’s tired of the same old song”
Savage evokes a special individuality in his music that radiates all throughout the album.
“I spent 100 years at home, getting through my nightmares all alone”
“I confess I need help”; Savage is honest and introspective, an easily relatable character to say the least.
“Guess that’s why I love you…
Feels so good, feels so bad”
“Other Death” sounds like a man exploring himself and the world in search of the remarkable in the usually unremarkable. Something every conscious person has gone through at some point. Soft keys and bells are all over the place in the production with non intrusive percussion; making this a perfect album for self reflection and small group gatherings.
“Maybe it’s the dusk or maybe it’s the dawn.”
The album is available for purchase September 18th and can be preordered now on iTunes. I would say it’s definitely worth the money and is one of my favorite Pop/Indie releases of the year so far.
