Alternative hip hop trio Death By Icon have been capturing attention nationwide as they’ve prepared to drop Hassah. Singles for the project premiered on Complex, AFROPUNK, Mishka NYC and Pigeons and Planes. It follows up their critically lauded debut Trybecca and their growth is remarkable. The project is 10 tracks in length; the music is intricate, full and deep and deserves several listens.
MC Vic, MC and producer Ant and producer Dook are all extremely creative musicians resulting in an original and innovative sound. The project was recorded at Classick Studios and mixed by Chris Classick. Death By Icon said that balance became a key point in creating this project, they had to contend with some distance as Dook is based in LA and Ant & Vic are in Chicago.
“Dook made a trip out to Chicago for a few days and “Wake Up” came out of that visit. For the first time in a while we were all in the same place creating again. That really set the tone for the project. Our personal lives were taking us in different directions, but our love for the music kept us in the same place mentally. Hassah began as a track title for a beat that Ant had come up with. The word stuck sonically and we later applied our own meaning to it. Hassah came to represent that journey for balance along with the growth and maturity that came along with it in the process. Visually, Hassah is written out as a palindrome to further reinforce that idea of balance.” I encourage you to spend some time with Hassah.
