Midwest Hype is a 7 piece group hailing from all over the region (mostly Chicago and Northwest Indiana), the band got together while they were all students at Ball State University. Their new video emphasizes that “The Time” is now, which is a single from their full length project of the same title. Their music is a fusion of several different styles incorporating elements of rock, funk, reggae and hip hop. I spoke with Ideal, the emcee of the group who said “We come from all over the midwest and have different backgrounds and all listened to different types of music. The horn, bass and keyboard players are all classically trained and bring in a jazz and soul element, while me and our drummer listened to all hip hop coming up. Our singer/guitar player listened to tons of punk rock and reggae and he comes to us with melodies for songs and it’s a smooth writing process, we all add our own things to it. I’d say our sound is bright, uplifting and danceable.”
Midwest Hype are veterans of the Chicago stage and have played at most venues in the city including The House of Blues, a sold out record release event for The Time at the Double Door, Lincoln Hall and North Coast Festival to name a few. They are particularly excited about their upcoming show at The Metro on December 5. They are closing the evening’s ‘Chicago Artist Showcase’ with their set that begins at 11:45.
