Defcee has put in extraordinary work, time and soul on his project, Damn Near Grown, which began in 2008. His writing, delivery and curation of production and features shows gravitas & skill. There is a timeless sound to it, the moods show Defcee’s range and damn, it is smooth. “Purplewatersugardrank” is like a Chicago all star cut, “Rappershit” produced and featuring Saba with Joseph Chilliams is a personal fav, as is the emotional “Keep,” a memorial to lost loved ones, Defcee sings “I wish loving you was enough to keep you here.” Not only does Defcee contribute musically to Chicago, but through teaching school and mentoring young artists in his work with YCA.
