We at 1833 are no different and want to celebrate the past with our weekly segment THROWBACK THURSDAY’S; check below to see what era our contributors are stuck in this week and come back every thursday to find out what songs you forgot you missed.

Hey Yolo Bear bring that honey

I’ve never personally met Alex G, but he seems like a pretty strange guy. Each time I’ve seen him perform, his onstage antics are often bizarre and leave the audience questioning whether or not he’s all there. Most notably, at last years Fader Fort at SXSW, G repeatedly gave hints as to who the special guest for the night is, hinting more and more with each hint that the guest would be Bulls legend Michael Jordan (it ended up being Travi$ Scott). Though G might be a strange dude in his own right, he writes some amazing songs that are as personal and relatable as anything I’ve listened to before. “Boy” is my favorite song off G’s breakthrough 2014 album “DSU”. The last song on the album, “Boy” wraps up a 13 track story about being at college and being away from home for the first time. He touches on looking at the world through different angels, reconnecting with old friends and losing some along the way. Reason I picked this song is because Alex G is releasing the follow up to “DSU” this week, entitled “Beach Music” and I could not be more stoked. His music is amazing fall music and touches me in a way most other songwriters dream of being able to. At only 22, I look forward to watching him progress and grow as a musical artist.
feel like a million eyes on me
feel like a cannon ball i see
a tree it loses all its leaves
and you are dead to me
you watch someone you know
turn into static company
and now you see
do you wish you were
“i am not the boy you knew”

I have a really good friend who I haven’t seen in a while, and the only time I’ve seen him cry was to this song. “Rest My Chemistry” is one of Interpol’s most honest and on-the-nose songs, and one of the gloomiest from a band that is pretty much quite depressing most all the time. It’s a song about cocaine addiction, broken relationships and regret. I’ve always loved the way the song opens with a few mellow piano chords, and then the sudden realization of the subject’s addiction hits as the instrumentation all comes in for one sonic blast.
“I haven’t slept for two days
I’ve bathed in nothing but sweat
And I’ve made hallways scenes for things to regret
My friends they come
And the lines they go by
Tonight I’m gonna rest my chemistry”
Although “Rest My Chemistry” is clearly about one particular substance, the point of addiction the singer reaches where he understands he has to make a drastic lifestyle change can be applicable to anything; alcohol, coffee, sex, money, etc. This song is an earnest testament to the importance of stepping back and keeping life in perspective.
Martin:
Phoebe Ryan is cute, has green hair, and beautifully mashed up “Ignition” with “Do You?”. Pop music is great and we have an interview coming up with her.
Alexy:
The impact this song had on culture is so real.
2004. A time when Mean Girls and Still Tippin’ dominated mainstream American culture.
Mama Sims:
“Everything is gonna be alright.” I wanted to share something purely beautiful this week.
