Music can send you down a trip on memory lane, it’ll make you remember a loved one or a fun time in your life or maybe even that one night with that special someone… you know what i’m talking about. We at 1833 are no different and want to celebrate the past with our weekly segment THROWBACK THURSDAY’S; check below to see what era our contributors are stuck in this week and come back every thursday to find out what songs you forgot you missed.
Zach:
He’s come so far but at the same time he was always a legend.
Juttin:
I recently received news I’ll be getting the chance to interview one of the members of this iconic Chicago rap group, and i could not be more stoked. The Cool Kids got me into sneaker culture, hip-hop blogging, and really hip-hop for the most part. I was just 13 when The Bake Sale dropped and I owe my love for hip-hop and the culture around it Mikey and Chuck. This is the opening track to the Bake Sale EP and I’ve probably played it around 2,000 times since I first heard it.
“Did you know I made this beat with my mouth and a bell?
Just a F.Y.I.
I’m F.L.Y.
And for those who can’t spell I’m a pretty swell guy
I caught a lot of fish I think I’ll have a fish fry.”
Alexy:
My neighbors who also double as my grandparents were Bob Dylans music publishers, as a result I am a lot more familiar with his catalogue than most people my age. I found myself feeling a little alone one morning and decided to put on some of my favorite Dylan songs, two things struck me: 1. Life is a lot more gratifying when you are living for other people & 2. Bob Dylan was a freakin’ lyricist. Like BARS for real, it inspires me so much to see a man with a lackluster voice saying IDGAF and just singing the songs in his heart. I think we all want to do the same thing in one way or another.
Mama Sims:
You can thank me now for sharing 13 minutes of Luther Vandross. The man just stands there, wearing a sparkly jacket, and sings like a God. I was blessed to see a show from this tour. I brought my grandparents to Rosemont Horizon and we had a ball. It is one of my favorite memories of a night spent with them. Rest in power Luther, you are missed.
Martin:
Many don’t know that Future was the first to take a crack at the (what is now) “Drunk in Love”‘s production but he passed it on to Beyoncé and Jay and then they turned it into one of the biggest songs in recent memory.
Appleby:
If you’re familiar with my story then you know Corbin {FKA Spooky Black} inspired me to create music. ‘without u’ was the record I first heard and while it’s spectacular, “Personal Touch” is damn near legendary. Sporting black du-rags and going by Lil’ Spook then, somehow a kid from St.Paul, Minnesota managed to create vintage grown folks music. I found that to be extremely fascinating given few knew of him and I fell down the rabbit hole. Listening to everything available from him online lollll.
“Girl, bring that body right over here
Let me show you a couple of moves I learned last year”
